LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Jeanette A. Michael
25 Years of being Washington, D.C.'s Best Bet!
During 2007, the D.C. Lottery and Charitable Games Control Board will celebrate 25 years of being Washington, D.C.’s “Best Bet.” I am therefore extremely proud to announce that we transferred $73.8 million to the city’s General Fund while helping non-profit organizations raise $4.8 million through charitable gaming during fiscal year 2006, October 1, 2005 – September 30, 2006.
With oversight from the Mayor and Council of the District of Columbia, contributions to the General Fund benefit a highly diverse number of functions, including: community development, schools, health and welfare, and public transportation. More than 500,000 citizens, who reside in the Nation’s Capital, benefit from these and other programs that are supported though the General Fund, and the D.C. Lottery is proud to assist in making the city a better place to live, work, and visit.
D.C. Lottery players made a tremendous contribution to our success by purchasing $268 million in tickets and winning an outstanding $146.6 million in prizes. Based on sales it’s the highest dollar amount ever won by D.C. Lottery players since the agency opened for business in August of 1982.
These achievements could not have been attained without the sales expertise of our agents, who earned more than $16.5 million in commissions by asking for the sale, the guidance provided by our advisory council, and the hard work of staff. Their unwavering dedication enabled the D.C. Lottery to generate millions of dollars for the District of Columbia. Therefore, in celebrating our 25th anniversary, we are moving forward with business strategies that maximize the fun of playing D.C. Lottery games and that continue the winning experience for those who enjoy our products.
