Talk about giving back! Giant Food, the D.C. Lottery agent that sold the historic $144M POWERBALL ticket in April 2009, donated its $100,000 agent commission to the Capital Area Food Bank, “the largest, public nonprofit hunger and nutrition education resource,” in the Washington, D.C. metro area.
The winning ticket for the largest POWERBALL jackpot in the history of the D.C. Lottery was purchased at Giant’s Camp Simms (1535 Alabama Avenue, S.E.) location. That fact, coupled with actual winner being a resident of Southeast Washington, D.C. has boosted neighborhood spirits.
Giant opened the Camp Simms store two years ago. The presence of the large retail grocer is part of the growing economic development trend in the area.
“When we [Giant] knew that we were going to receive $100,000, then it was very, very easy to select the Capital Area Food Bank. We’ve been involved with the Capital Area Food Bank for a longtime, and this is a way for Giant to further its commitment in the community,” affirmed Kim Brown, Giant’s Vice President of Public Affairs and Community Affairs.
